WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Voters in Halstead voted to block a plan for a new battery energy storage system within city limits.
The votes to prohibit the system took a 2/3 majority in Tuesday’s election.
Before the vote, some residents said they were concerned about what would happen if the storage system caught fire.
The proposed project for Halstead’s industrial park was said to have enough capacity to power 200,000 homes for up to four hours. n known.
“People do not want this,” one Halstead resident said during a meeting in July to discuss the project.
Those involved in the project said it would assist in powering the community, helping “to alleviate the local grid in times of congestion and when there’s a risk of a blackout.”
