A HGV driver told police he had "definitely, definitely drifted off" after causing a crash on the M6 which left a man with life-changing brain injuries.

Michael Brook was in a car transporter on the motorway in Cheshire in the early hours of October 18 last year. His vehicle crashed into a stationary Ford Fusion on the northbound carriageway.

When police arrived at the scene he made a frank admission. On footage recorded by police an officer asks 'can you tell me what's happened'. Mr Brook replies: "I'll be honest. I was obviously heading up this way where I got to a point where I knew I needed to stop...I could feel myself getting tired. I could feel myself drifting off. That's why I opened the energy drink. I suppose I drifted off at the wrong time."
