BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Lee Zeldin visited the North Dakota State Capitol Wednesday, November 5, to sign an agreement implementing the state's coal ash recycling program.
The Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Permit Program intends to make the recycling of coal ash safer and more efficient, while helping to reduce costs for coal producers. The program will allow the state, rather than the federal government, to permit CCR disposal.
CCR is mainly produced as a byproduct from burning coal in power plants.
The EPA determined on May 16 that the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality's application met the standards for approval. After a public comment period, the EPA finalized approval for the program. Now, North Dakota is the f
