MINOT, ND (KXNET) — As Veteran's Day approaches, officials are shedding light on how we can better protect our veterans after they take off their uniform.

A new survey from AARP shows that scams targeting veterans are still a big problem. Nearly four in ten veterans said they've been contacted by someone pretending to be with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or another government agency.

That's why advocates are urging vets to stay vigilant.

"If you get an unsolicited text, call, somebody who's saying they're from the VA or from another government office, watch out for that," AARP Community Outreach Director Doreen Streyle said.
