LAS VEGAS ( FOX5 ) — The Las Vegas City Council voted to approve a proposed ordinance that would ban the sale of dogs, cats, rabbits, pot-bellied pigs and guinea pigs in retail pet shops.
The ban would give existing pet shops three years to phase out their live animal sales, with a full ban taking effect in November 2028. During the interim period, businesses would have to develop written disease-control plans and clearly post information about pets’ prices and origins. They would also have to provide health certificates and warranties.
The city passed a pet sale ban in 2017 but repealed it a year later. Animal advocates and rescue organizations have pushed for a replacement ordinance ever since.
