DILLON, S.C. (WBTW) -- The Dillon County Coroner's Office has identified a 52-year-old man killed in a Monday morning shooting.

Burnie Ray Townsend of Dillon died in the shooting, Coroner Donnie Grimsley said. It happened at about 8 a.m. during an altercation at the 24 Hour Spot on Highway 301 in Dillon.

Police Chief David Lane said Monday that investigators had identified a person of interest but have not released any names.

The manager of the store, Dorian Thomas, said Townsend was well-known in the community and was there every morning, helping out the store in whatever way he could. He was described as a good and genuine person.

“It was devastating, I couldn’t believe it was him. I couldn’t believe — what could he have done to draw somebody to do that to him?” Dorian Thomas said. “
