FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW -- A former Royall Elementary teaching assistant fired in the wake of a July 2024 cultural celebration event that saw some participants wear "Border Patrol" T-shirts is suing the school district.

Sandra Poston filed a defamation and discrimination lawsuit against Florence School District One on Monday in U.S. District Court, which offers new details into the incident which drew national attention.

A picture posted to the school’s Facebook page on July 31, 2024 depicted staff members wearing sombreros and other Hispanic attire as part of the event. Two people were captured wearing gray “Border Patrol” T-shirts.

Florence One Schools could not immediately be reached for comment, but district officials have said in the past they don't comment on pending litigatio
