LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The nation loses about 17 veterans to suicide every day, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs — and Mid-Michigan came together Wednesday to do something about it.

With Veterans Day around the corner, the community gathered at an event focusing on veterans' mental health.

The room was filled with stars, stripes, and stories—stories of honorable service, but also great sacrifice.

"I was in the United States Air Force for four years and proudly served," said Tim Poxson, who now works with the American Legion Dept. of Michigan.

“I lost my husband four years ago," said Loni Hill, the widow of a late veteran.

Chair of the Lansing Area Veterans Coalition, Inetta Smith, knows of the struggle firsthand, from her husband who served in Vietnam.
