PORTLAND, Ore. — A Portland family said they're lucky to be alive after chunks of concrete fell from the Morrison Bridge viaduct on Sunday afternoon, slamming into the hood of their Tesla as they drove along Interstate 5 below.

Enrique Ruiz was driving home from church with his wife and three children around 12:40 p.m. when he heard what he described as a sudden explosion.

“It felt like a bomb dropping on our car,” Ruiz said. “It was just inches away from my wife and kids. The timing was crazy.”

The impact left a large dent in the front of his Tesla, narrowly missing the windshield and the passenger seat where his wife was sitting. Ruiz said he later returned to the area and found several concrete chunks scattered on the freeway. He collected the pieces and matched them to a missing sec
