HAMPTON, Va. — The Hampton University women’s basketball team opened its season with a resounding statement Wednesday night, dismantling crosstown foe Apprentice School 105–21 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Despite the short 7-mile distance between the schools, the matchup marked their first meeting on the hardwood — and the Pirates made it one to remember. Hampton’s defense was relentless from the opening tip, forcing 48 turnovers and converting them into 49 points in a one-sided showcase at the Convocation Center.

“We put defense at the forefront of everything we do,” head coach Tamisha Augustin said. “I’m also very pleased with the chemistry of this year’s team. They genuinely like one another and hang out with each other.”
