It’s November! So we may as well talk about October.

Or, more precisely, “The October Fair.”

Most often described as a “vast manuscript” written by Thomas Wolfe, “The October Fair” was whittled down by Wolfe’s editor Edward Aswell into a novel after Wolfe’s death in 1938.

I’ve never read the novel, but its title is a phrase that I — and most of us — have heard over and over again: “You Can’t Go Home Again.”

Catchy, isn’t it? And it was repeated to me endlessly a couple of weeks ago when Donna B., my high school sweetie, came up from Florida for a visit and told me she wanted to return to our old hometown of Rosedale, Queens.
