NEW YORK (PIX11) – The Federal Aviation Administration is expected to publish a list on Thursday of 40 major airports expected to cut flights by 10% due to the government shutdown.
Newark Liberty International Airport has seen 8-hour delays over the last few weeks as air traffic controllers aren’t getting paid. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the low levels of staffing mean the FAA can’t handle the number of planes in the air.
The West Coast has been experiencing the highest level of delays, according to airline tracking service FlightAware. The New York-New Jersey region is suffering mid-level delays.
The FAA hasn’t announced which airports will reduce service. Duffy said there haven’t been safety issues because of staffing, but he is trying to prevent anything from happening.
