NEWBURGH – Tamika Stewart lost a Democratic primary for Newburgh City Council Ward 3 in June to an opponent allegedly being investigated by law enforcement for voter fraud.
After the sting of that defeat, Stewart is enjoying her win over Ann Marie Hines by a vote of 392-323 on Tuesday night. Stewart ran on the Working Families Party in the general election. The seat became open when Councilman Bob Sklarz announced that he would be retiring at the end of the year.
“I still haven’t absorbed it, it still hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Stewart, a social worker. “But I am someone who believes you have to go through something to accomplish something. I took it all in stride. It feels good to win for the community and for the people.”
