WALLKILL – Monroe-Woodbury’s impressive season came to an end with a 2-1 loss to North Rockland in the first round of the Class AAA girls’ state soccer tournament on Wednesday at Wallkill High School.
Giavonna Orfini scored the game-winner for North Rockland (14-4) on an assist from Sadie Essick with 13:00 remaining. Monroe-Woodbury (15-3) opened the scoring in the first half on a goal by Audrey Saliba off a corner kick. North Rockland tied the game with 11 minutes left in the first half on a goal by Essick.
Monroe-Woodbury entered the game as the seventh-ranked Class AAA team in the state, and North Rockland was ranked 11 th . North Rockland moves on to play Syracuse-area champion Cicero North High School in the quarterfinals at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at Nottingham High School.
