STERLING, Va. — Over a year and a half after the deadly house explosion in Sterling that killed a volunteer firefighter, the former propane technician convicted for his negligence was scheduled to be sentenced Thursday. But after some confusion at the court, it could be months before it actually happens.

Judge James Plowman said the defense had filed a motion the day before asking for him to throw out the guilty verdict or set a new trial date. They're arguing that the jury didn't have the legal standing to find him guilty based on the evidence shown.

The judge said he takes partial responsibility for not setting any dates earlier to hear any motions. The government has until Dec. 19 to respond to the defense's motion, and then the judge has Jan. 22, 2026 to schedule next steps. If the
