CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The death penalty will not be sought against four men charged in the shooting death of 4-year-old Jayce Edwards.
Marquise Guerrier, 24, Angelo Hudson, 20, Jordan Davis, 23, and Anthony Abel, 18, all had Rule 24 hearings in Mecklenburg County Court on Thursday. Prosecutors will not seek the death penalty against any of the suspects, according to court orders filed on Thursday.
Police say the group tried to steal a Dodge Charger from a Steele Creek neighborhood on Sept. 17, and fired several shots as they left the area. One of those bullets ultimately went into a home and killed Jayce while he was inside and sleeping.
Jayce's mother died in January from stage 4 colon cancer. Jayce had been living with his grandmother at the time of the shooting.
