MONTPELIER, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) - Vermont's Fish and Wildlife department has revealed results from this years moose hunt, which took place over two periods in October.
Between the archery season from October 1 to the 7, and the regular season from October 18 to 23, a total of 68 moose were reportedly harvested.
All moose were harvested in northeastern Vermont, specifically in the Wildlife Management Unit E. That area is the only one where moose hunting is allowed, says the department.
In WMU-E, department moose biologist Nick Fortin says that the "high density of moose contributes to high winter tick numbers that can negatively impact moose health and survival.
"A goal of this year’s hunt was to improve the overall health of WMU-E’s moose population by reducing its density.”
