DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - The Dorchester County Coroner has released the name of the inmate who died in custody Wednesday morning.

Nathaniel Witherspoon, 71, died at the jail.

Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Steven Wright says detention deputies at the L.C. Knight Detention Center were notified Wednesday around 8 a.m. of a male inmate, now identified as Witherspoon, who was unresponsive during uniform change. Deputies reportedly began rendering aid.

Dorchester County Fire-Rescue, Dorchester County EMS and detention center medical personnel took over and continued attempting life-saving measures.

Despite this, Witherspoon died.

The sheriff’s office requested SLED to conduct an independent investigation into this.
