MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCSC) - The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public’s help in locating a man who allegedly assaulted one of its deputies during a traffic stop.
Deputies stopped Kofi Amartei Opoku Nkromah, 39, on Old Mill Road in the St. Stephen area for failure to maintain lanes and disregarding a stop sign just before 6 a.m. Thursday, sheriff spokesperson Carli Carr said. During the stop, they determined that Nkromah was attempting to lie to them about his identity and when they attempted to detain him, he assaulted a deputy and fled the scene on foot.
The deputy suffered injuries from the assault.
Carr said he has outstanding warrants from the South Carolina Highway Patrol and is known to be a violent offender.
