Carnell thought, before a routine team meeting, he was there to announce to defenders Jakob Glesnes and Kai Wagner that they had made MLS’s Best XI¸ with aid both players’ families in video messages. But the Union’s public relations staff stepped in to let Carnell know they weren’t done.
“I saw my wife pop up on the screen,” Carnell said. “So it was pretty cool. She had left a nice message, and some folks from South Africa reached out. So, really special moment, for sure.”
Carnell on Thursday was named MLS Coach of the Year, a reward for the first-year coach leading the Union to the Supporters’ Shield, the club’s second ever trophy. The Union remain alive in the MLS Cup pla
