There’s money in the new federal budget to help pay for special projects that will help Waterloo Region grow — like extending Ion light rail services to Cambridge, or building a new runway at the Region of Waterloo International Airport.

Local municipal leaders say they’re happy for that, with $51 billion targeted over 10 years in a new Build Communities Strong Fund to help create infrastructure across Canada.

But there’s also lingering uncertainty about what kind of economy Canada will have in the future, after the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump take effect, and this country is forced to adapt and seek new trading partners.
