CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte City Council will soon lean even more blue after Democrat Kimberly Owens defeated Republican Krista Bokhari by 13 points, making Owens the first Democrat to hold the District 6 seat.

The political newcomer and attorney said she plans to prioritize transit, public safety and reaching out to voters who didn't support her campaign.

"I want District 6 to fit into the other districts and be welcoming and to also be open to just so much of what Charlotte has to offer," Owens said.

Come December, it will be Owens' first time in public office and District 6's first time with a Democratic representative. The result surprised even other council members, including Malcolm Graham, who addressed the race during a Wednesday press conference.
