PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A new state survey shows Arizona’s teacher shortage remains in “crisis mode” as thousands of openings remain vacant.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne says a new Arizona Department of Education survey of public schools shows that over 1,000 Arizona teachers have quit since July. More than 4,000 teaching positions are open and are being covered by long-term substitutes or other part-time positions. The survey also shows nearly 1,400 spots remain unfilled.

Horne called the shortage an “intolerable situation” that “must be addressed immediately,” highlighting the need to renew Proposition 123, which expired earlier this year . The proposition, first approved by voters in 2016 , increased the amount of state land trust money distributed to public scho
