OTTAWA — NDP interim leader Don Davies announced that his caucus will support the minority Liberal government during the first of three confidence votes related to the federal budget. Members of Parliament are scheduled to vote on two amendments to the budget proposed by the Bloc Québécois and the Conservatives.
Government House leader Steven MacKinnon’s office indicated that these votes are classified as confidence matters. Both amendments seek to reject the budget. If the government fails to secure a majority in either vote, or in the vote on the budget itself, it could lead to a snap election.
Davies stated that the NDP caucus cannot back the Conservative amendment, which is set for a vote later today. He added that the seven New Democrat MPs are still deliberating on how to approach the Bloc amendment and the budget vote itself.
The outcome of these votes is crucial for the stability of the current government, as losing any of them could significantly alter the political landscape in Canada. The NDP's decision to support the government reflects their strategy in navigating the complexities of a minority parliament.
