LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Cold weather officially makes it s’mores season, meaning Southwest Louisiana may be spotting more backyard fires.

Lieutenant Danny Rose with Ward No. One Fire Department warns the public about how important it is to keep an eye on your fire once it’s been lit.

“A bonfire can get out of control really, really fast. The main thing that we emphasize is never leave it unattended,” Lieutenant Rose said.

Chief Robby Trahan said that they see fires starting from a variety of different outlets such as natural gas, propane, woodburning and charcoal.

When making your fire, fire fighter Tommy LeDoux said its important to not only keep a mindful eye on it but also to remember your surroundings before lighting the first flame.
