WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The sound of bugle taps played out in front of the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita on Thursday during a final mile ceremony for a Navy veteran who died without family or friends to claim him.
Daniel Schuhs, who served in the Navy from 1975 to 1978, was honored by community members who came together to ensure he received a dignified burial.
The final mile practice is for veterans who have died and don’t have family or friends to claim them.
“It’s an honor to participate, and then certainly it’s an opportunity to honor the individual that has passed, and it’s a small way of saying thank you,” said Don Hansen, the bugler who played taps at the ceremony.
Schuhs spent half of his Navy career deplyed aboard ship, according to the Dole VA.
