Students across Alaska have another chance to put their creativity to work while promoting an important health message. The 5th annual Alaska Radon Poster Contest is now open.

Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause lung cancer and is found throughout Alaska. The contest encourages students ages 9 to 14 to raise awareness about the dangers of radon through artwork.

Paul Goodfellow, Geological Health Hazards Program Manager with the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys, says homeowners can request free radon test kits to check their homes for high levels.

Prizes for the contest include gift cards for students and their classrooms, with first-place artwork submitted as Alaska’s entry to the National Radon Poster Contest. Entries must be emailed or postmarked by De
