TEXARKANA, Ark. - Harvest Regional Food Bank handed out free food boxes Thursday at four drive-through sites on both sides of Texarkana.
The food distribution event was held in response to the rise in need of food assistance from residents impacted by the government shutdown and delay in SNAP benefits.
Thousands of people lined up at four locations across Texarkana.
“I feel like if people are willing to wait in line, park for hours, and stay in line until they get served. It just shows what a need there is,” said Camille Wrinkle, Harvest Texarkana executive director.
Wrinkle says they're providing emergency food to address the immediate hunger relief needs on both sides of Texarkana.
Volunteers distributed shelf-stable food boxes, fresh produce and frozen fish to about 1,400 families
