Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage, which is among the 40 busiest hubs in the U.S., will start cutting flights starting Friday due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Wednesday that it would reduce air traffic by 10% in high-volume markets to maintain travel safety. The FAA stated that air traffic controllers are showing signs of strain as they go unpaid during the government shutdown.

Among the other 40 airports are Seattle, Los Angeles, Denver, Atlanta, Dallas, San Francisco and multiple airports in Chicago, New York and Houston.

Industry analysts say the 10% reduction could affect 1,800 flights and increase the number of passengers by 268,000 a day.
