SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - At Garfield Elementary, the lessons aren’t just about reading and math. They’re about kindness and community as the school steps up to help their own students in need, especially as it gets colder each month.

Garfield Elementary is a Title I school, which means many students come from low-income families and could be constantly moving around. Thankfully, Garfield can be a real safe space for them.

“Our families work really hard, and it’s not like they’re just sitting around waiting for someone to give them something,” said Kristin Skogstad, the principal at Garfield. “They really do work hard, and they try to do the best for their families as they can, but sometimes they just need a little extra help.”
