MACOMB (WGEM) - A Macomb family is left wondering ‘what’s next’ after losing everything in a house fire Tuesday evening.

Macomb fire officials reported the fire happened in the 600 block of W. Woodbury Street just before 6 p.m.

Maxine Richards and her husband David were in the basement at the time and were alerted by a neighbor. The fire was the results of a space heater that was plugged into an extension chord on the front porch to keep kittens warm.

Richards said she went back into the home to try and rescue the family’s dogs. Of the seven dogs, five were saved but two died.

For the last 48 hours, life for the Richards family has been put on its heels. Since Tuesday, the family has stayed in a hotel room in Macomb. Autoplay
