MACOMB (WGEM) - A new mural highlighting McDonough County’s role in the Underground Railroad now stands in the Thomas C. Carper Amtrak Station.
Dozens of local residents and community leaders gathered inside the depot.
Michael Mahoney, the mural artist and also the creator of the C.T. Vivian mural just off the square, said he finished the piece on Tuesday, but getting there was a process.
“I wanted to give it everything I could,” Mahoney said. “At one point I even completely covered up, after a month’s work, I completely covered up this one. Painted the whole thing white because I didn’t like the design. I redid it.”
It was Mahoney’s goal to make the mural as real as possible, showing real faces and places that played a role locally.
“I wanted to humanize this,” Mahoney said.
