AUSTIN, Texas — The trial for Austin police officer Daniel Sanchez , who is accused of shooting and killing an Austin man while on duty in November 2022, started Thursday.
The jury was brought in just after 9:30 a.m.
Sanchez is charged with deadly conduct, a third-degree felony, for the shooting death of 33-year-old Rajan Moonesinghe on Nov. 15, 2022. Sanchez has pled not guilty.
Opening statements
Prosecutor Rob Drummond started opening statements with the last words of Moonesinghe, “It wasn’t me,” and pointed to the number of times he was shot, which was five.
