TUSCALOOSA, Ala (WIAT) – The City of Tuscaloosa is about to start a nation-wide search for an Executive Director of Public Safety.

The job title was recently created by the city, and it will be the highest paid position.

“I think $175,000 is certainly within a very acceptable range when you consider the responsibilities we're asking of this individual,” Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said.

Thousands of visitors pour into Tuscaloosa for collegiate sports, entertainment and other events the city is hosting. These events require additional security measures, which primarily fall on the Tuscaloosa Police Department, Maddox said.

The Executive Director of Public Safety would be over 911 calls, the Police and Fire Departments during large events, weather related disasters and other threats.
