GLENWOOD, Iowa. (WOWT) - Empty shelves tell the story in Glenwood as America’s longest government shutdown continues to impact food security across rural communities.
The Mills County Storehouse operates as both a thrift store and food pantry, using proceeds from donated clothing and household goods to purchase food for families in need.
“Every one of our appointments is filled today,” said Bob Cummings, a volunteer at the storehouse.
Demand surges as federal shutdown continues
The pantry allows families to shop by appointment, but those slots have filled up this entire month. Staff have added extra appointments to accommodate the increased demand.
