A tragic twist has emerged in the deadly UPS cargo plane crash in the United States, with reports the three crew members killed were meant to be flying on a different aircraft before a last-minute switch.

The safety record of the jet they did board is now under intense scrutiny, with authorities revealing it recently underwent maintenance for a fuel tank crack.

Days after the fiery crash of UPS flight 2976, the company has released the names of the crew members who were killed.

Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Captain Dana Diamond were among the 12 who died in the accident.

The jet came down shortly after takeoff from Louisville Airport in Kentucky after the number one engine on its left wing caught fire and fell off.
