SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Cleanup efforts at the former Kerr-McGee railroad tie treatment facility in north Springfield are ongoing, following years of contamination concerns from residents who believe the site is linked to health problems in the community.

The facility, which has been closed for years, sits on 2800 West High Street, where neighbors have reported health issues they suspect are tied to toxic chemicals at the site.

The primary pollutant at the site is creosote, a chemical known to be carcinogenic. However, officials have not confirmed a direct connection between the site’s contamination and the reported cancer cases in the area.

At a public meeting held Tuesday evening, officials provided updates on the progress of the cleanup, which is being led by the Multistate Trust.
