SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Doctors in Savannah walked WSAV through their robotic system that allows them to fight lung cancer with unprecedented precision Thursday.
The Monarch procedure can pinpoint the location of lung cancer better than traditional imaging. St. Joseph's/Candler is one of the few hospitals in the country using it.
WSAV was the only station able to watch Dr. Douglas Mullins perform the procedure during Lung Cancer Awareness Month. It's the deadliest cancer worldwide, and this was one of 1,600 procedures for Mullins.
The device Dr. Mullins uses to control where the tube goes looks like a video game controller, and the image that's shown on screen mimics a Google map.
The patient had a small nodule or lump in his lungs, identified through a lung cancer screening.
