The garbage truck driver killed in a crash on Long Island has been identified, Suffolk County Police announced on Thursday, Nov. 6.
The crash happened around 11:50 a.m. Thursday on the eastbound Sunrise Highway Service Road in East Islip near the Southern State Parkway exit, police said. Xavier Angulo Espinoza, 45, of Central Islip, lost control of the truck, which overturned and caught fire near the loop ramp connecting Sunrise Highway to the Heckscher State Parkway.
Espinoza was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the truck was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The service road was closed for several hours at Exit 44 while emergency crews worked the scene. Detectives impounded the vehicle for a safety check and continue to investigate.
Additional details about Espinoza's life were not immediately available. Loved ones are invited to share a statement, funeral details, and/or photos by emailing mmashburn@dailyvoice.com.
