BECKLEY, W.Va. — A late second-half surge saw Wheeling Park’s girls’ soccer squad come back from the brink Thursday evening during the West Virginia State Soccer Championships Class AAAA semifinals. However, Oak Hill High School’s Lady Red Devils scored the goal that mattered early in extra time to grab a 4-3 victory and head to Saturday’s Class AAAA girls state championship match against George Washington.
Park, the top-ranked girls team in the state for most of the season, saw itself down 3-1 with 12 minutes remaining and without one of its best defenders in Lakin Chambers, who left earlier in the second half with an injury. Oak Hill had packed its defense in to keep the Lady Patriots away from scoring opportunities.
