Indiana’s deer hunters can help their fellow Hoosiers this fall by donating a harvested buck or doe to the state’s Hunt for Hunger program .

The Indiana Department of Natural Resource’s Division of Law Enforcement division heads up the $145,500 state-run program enacted through legislation in 2013 that encourages hunters to share their excess kills to help feed the hungry. DNR partners with a handful of non-profits, such as Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry, to implement the program.

Capt. Jet Quillen, spokesperson for DNR’s law enforcement division , said the program reaches more Hoosiers each year. Last year Hunt for Hunger took in 1,034 deer, totaling more than 48,000 pounds of processed meat or roughly 192,000 quarter pound burger patties.
