Every Friday morning of the high school football season, we’ll look back at a memory for that date in local football history.
An old-fashioned, grind-it-out game ultimately came down to a 36-yard field goal attempt in the final moments of the first-round Division IV playoff game between Genoa and Wauseon on Nov. 7, 2014. But the attempt to win the game by Genoa All-Ohio place-kicker Cody Pickard was upstaged when Wauseon’s Peyten Shadbolt, a 5-foot-7, 157-pound senior, blocked the attempt with 13 seconds to go.
Wauseon held on to a 9-7 victory to move to 11-0. Genoa, which was tied at 7 until a punt snap midway through the fourth quarter sailed out of the back of the end zone for a safety, finished with an 8-3 record.
"I'd rather be lucky than good," Wauseon coach Travis Cooper said.
