BOSTON —

A Massachusetts district court judge who presided over some of the state’s most high-profile and notorious cases is retiring after more than 40 years on the bench.

U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts Senior Judge Mark Wolf was first appointed to the court in 1985 and served as its chief judge from 2006 through 2012. He has been a senior judge since.

Among the cases he presided over was spree killer Gary Lee Sampson, who was convicted and initially sentenced to death in the murders of three people in Massachusetts and New Hampshire in 2001.

Wolf also presided over the trial of former Massachusetts Speaker of the House Sal DiMasi, who was convicted on a variety of corruption charges and sentenced to eight years in prison.
