A B.C. couple who had been convicted of tax evasion as part of a scheme that counselled hundreds of people to evade millions of dollars in taxes has lost an appeal of their tax bill.

Russell Anthony Porisky and Elaine Gould ran Paradigm Education Group, teaching more than 800 people to dodge taxes by declaring themselves as a “natural person.”

Between tax years 2004 and 2008, the pair raked in more than $1.4 million in gross revenue and $569,000 in profit by hosting seminars and selling books, training manuals and other materials, said court documents. But they paid no income tax nor collected any GST during this period.

Porisky and Gould were assessed unpaid income taxes, uncollected GST and penalties — a decision upheld by the Tax Court of Canada last year.
