India's Supreme Court has announced it will consider a plea for an independent investigation into the tragic Air India Flight 171 crash, which occurred shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad in June. The crash resulted in the deaths of 241 people on board and an additional 19 fatalities on the ground. The preliminary report from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) does not implicate the flight's captain, Sumeet Sabharwal, but his father, Pushkar Raj Sabharwal, is advocating for a thorough examination by a panel of aviation experts. A hearing regarding this plea is set for 10 November. Viswashkumar Ramesh, the sole survivor among the passengers, described the emotional toll of the incident in an interview, stating he has been "broken down" by the trauma. Ramesh, who resides in Leicester with his family, is currently dealing with ongoing physical pain, including knee, shoulder, and back issues, as well as burns to his arm. He has been offered a flat interim payment of £21,500 as part of his personal injury claim. The AAIB's preliminary report, released in July, indicated that switches controlling fuel in the cockpit were found in the "CUTOFF" position. An audio recording captured a conversation between the pilots, where one questioned why the fuel was cut off, to which the other replied that he had not done so. The report did not specify which pilot made each comment. Both pilots were seasoned professionals, with a combined flying experience of approximately 19,000 hours, including over 9,000 hours on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Pushkar Sabharwal has expressed dissatisfaction with the AAIB's investigation, claiming that officials suggested his son was responsible for the fuel cut-off. The government has refuted these claims, asserting that the investigation has been conducted thoroughly and transparently. As the legal proceedings unfold, the families affected by the crash continue to seek answers and accountability for the devastating incident.
