DES MOINES, Iowa —

Gov. Kim Reynolds announced the "Healthy Hometowns" plan to expand health care access for rural Iowans.

The governor says the state has submitted its application for the Rural Health Transformation Program , a federal funding initiative managed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The proposal focuses on investments in new equipment and facilities, recruiting and retaining top-tier health care workers, increasing access to cancer screenings, and bringing care directly to rural residents through mobile health services. If fully awarded, Iowa could receive $200 million per year, totaling $1 billion over five years.

The proposal also includes commitments to policy changes to help expand rural health care access.
