MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) - A wanted fugitive out of Wisconsin is accused of abandoning his disabled mother at a Murfreesboro Walmart and later being found with copious amounts of drugs.
The Murfreesboro Police Department reports that 54-year-old Paul Benzel has been on the run for years for a parole violation for child neglect.
Officers responded to the Walmart on Old Fort Parkway just before 1 p.m. for a welfare check. Upon arrival, it appeared that Benzel abandoned his 71-year-old disabled mother, leaving all her belongings and dog in a shopping cart, according to police.
Detectives executed a search warrant on Benzel’s camper and found him hiding along with illegal drugs and two other dogs, police said. Family is working on getting the mother back to Wisconsin.
