The Coast Guard rescued five people from a Connecticut-based sailboat that sank off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina on Thursday.

The Magic Bus sailboat (which is based in Stonington and travels to Bahamas) departed from Stonington, CT, and was headed to the Bahamas before taking on water almost 300 miles offshore, according to the distress call made by crew members.

All five people aboard abandoned ship into their life raft. The Coast Guard searched from the air.

The HC-130 Hercules aircraft crew located the life raft, with all five people aboard. They established communications and confirmed everyone was stable and in good condition, according to the Coast Guard.
