BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) - On Friday, thousands of people headed out in the field in hopes of filling a deer tag.

Deer gun season opened at noon around the state.

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department once again issued fewer tags this year, meaning only 42,300 hunters were successful in the lottery.

This season, Game and Fish workers will be spending time in northwest hunting units, near Williston, Tioga, and Crosby are testing for chronic wasting disease.

Bill Haase with the Game and Fish says some first-timers are in the field, including youth hunters.
