GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - SNAP benefits are being paid out in Wisconsin as negotiations with the federal shutdown continue, but a local organization still wants to make sure everyone gets the food they need.
Rooted In, Inc. held an “Emergency Cooking for the Community” event at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday. The local non-profit gathered more than 200 pounds of food for those in need.
They created packaged meals using ingredients that would have gone to waste, despite them still being safe to cook with. These meals will be distributed through several pantries that partner with Rooted In, Inc.
Every one-pound meal costs up to 15 cents to make, which is just for packaging; that comes out to 46 meals for just seven dollars. At least 300 portions include protein like barbecue pork, pulle
